Harare provincial police spokesperson Inspector Tadius Chibanda said the operation which started on November 1 would run until January 15 next year.

“We have arrested 1 015 people for various offences under the operation which started this month,” said Chibanda, adding the majority of the suspects were nabbed for robbery, unlawful entry and rape.

“Of late, we have been having an increase in cases of robbery, unlawful entry, rape and many other cases. So these cases are likely to increase during the festive season, that is why there is this operation. There will be heavy presence of police in our residential areas where the police will be patrolling in a bid to try and curb crime. Houses are also targeted because most people travel during the holidays leaving no one, so these houses will be at risk, that is why we are having patrols in residential areas too.”

Chibanda said police would also be conducting random firearms and weapons searches on pedestrians and motorists throughout the holidays.
