MDC has dismissed Zanu PF founder Enos Nkala as too old to make a reasonable assessment of the political situation in the country, after he tipped MDC-T to win the next elections.

REPORT BY SILAS NKALA STAFF REPORTER Nkala, forced to resign from both Zanu PF and the government in 1988 after the Willogate Scandal, at the weekend predicted that Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai would beat President Robert Mugabe in elections expected next year.

He said other parties were too insignificant to be considered serious contenders. But MDC spokesperson Nhlanhla Dube said Nkala must not be taken seriously. “Nkala is one of the old people who destroyed that party (Zanu PF) and his comments must not be taken seriously,” he said.

“No right-minded person in Zimbabwe would take Nkala seriously in these issues considering his background.

“He is one of the people who destroyed the country.”

Agrippa Madlela, leader of a Zapu faction fighting for federalism, said the two parties which Nkala viewed as the main political contenders had nothing new to offer. “Zanu PF pulled out of Zapu and because it was backed by the so-called majority tribe, it had to view itself as senior to Zapu,” he said.

“MDC-T came from MDC and because it commanded majority support from the so-called majority tribe, it is now considering itself as a bigger party.

“The two parties have nothing to offer in terms of economic policies.” Madlela admitted that parties in Matabeleland were fragmented and called on warring Zapu factions to join the MDC and endorse Ncube as their presidential candidate in the next election.

“The three Zapu factions must come together to join MDC in an effective alliance, or into one party MDC and fight elections together as one under Ncube’s leadership,” he said.

In a separate interview, chairman of the National People’s Council in the Dumiso Dabengwa-led Zapu party, Isaac Mabuka, said Nkala was entitled to his opinions.

“That is his thinking we cannot stop him from thinking that way,” he said. “As Zapu, we are preparing for elections. We will field candidates in the coming elections.”
