The colourful awards ceremony was organised to honour excellence in the local rugby fraternity from the players, coaches, officials and media personnel.

Nhakaniso has extensively covered the local game right from schools rugby to the various national representative sides since the first edition of NewsDay was published on June 7, 2010.

Harare Sports Club captain Daniel Hondo was the toast of the evening after scooping the coveted Lion Lager National Rugby League Player of the Year award and the Backline Player of the Year.

Hondo, who was not present at the awards ceremony as he is currently in Namibia with the touring Sables side, was recognised after leading local giants Sportivo to the league championship.

Hondo’s teammate Simba Chirimuuta was named Rookie of the Year, while Matabeleland Warriors coach Reuben Kupaza pipped his opposite number Nsikelelo Sibanda for the Coach of the Year award.

Warriors’ Osmond Lynx was named the Most Disciplined Player, while referee Gabriel Masenda scooped the Referee of the Year award.
