ZIMBABWE’S Courtney Lock lived up to his billing when he qualified for the quarter-finals of the International Tennis Federation’s East Africa Junior Circuit in Kenya yesterday. Report by Henry Mhara Sports Reporter
The tournament’s top seed beat Yemen’s Ghasaan Alansi 6-0, 6-4.
Lock will now meet 10th ranked David Dawson of Australia, who qualified for the last eight after beating South Africa’s Bjourn Scheepbouwer 6-2, 6-3 in the other match.
Lock, favourite to win the tournament, was given a bye in the first round before he made light work of Kenya’s Kevin Cheruiyot Langat, winning 6-4, 6-3 to advance into the next round.
If he progresses past Dawson, Lock, the younger brother to US-based Zimbabwe Davis Cup player Benjamin, will meet the winner between Luck Joshua and Pondicus Nikolas — both from South Africa — in the semi-finals.
Lock will be looking to improve on his performance after he fell by the wayside at the same stage of the competition at the ITF West/Central Africa Junior Circuit that was held in Lome, Togo, two months ago.
He was shocked by 12th seed Bagayoko Abdoulaye of Mali.
In the other quarter-finals in Mombasa, Lloyd George of South Africa will clash with fourth seed Ismael Changawa, another favourite to clinch the title.
