BANKET — A Kariba man was robbed of $1 200 cash after he was offered a lift by a gang of robbers on his way from Chinhoyi to Harare last week.Report by Own Correspondent

Mashonaland West provincial police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Ian Kohwera yesterday confirmed the robbery that took place along the Trelawney-Darwendale Road in Banket.

Police said on October 24 at around 9am, Chamunorwa Mubaya (65) of Nyamhunga in Kariba was offered a lift in an unmarked black Mazda sedan in Chinhoyi. The Harare-bound car had four occupants, three men and a woman.

According to police, the complainant sat together with two men at the rear and along the way the driver told the occupants that he was not going to use Harare-Chirundu Road to avoid police roadblocks. He said he would use the Trelawney-Darwendale Road.

“After travelling for a kilometre, the driver pulled off the road and stopped. The gang threatened to kill the complainant and demanded his valuables. Due to fear, the complainant took out $1 200 cash from his wallet and surrendered it to the robbers,” said Kohwera. He was then bundled out of the vehicle before the gang sped off, said Kohwera.

The matter was reported at ZRP Banket. Investigations are in progress.
