Thesly Mufunda, the league’s secretary, yesterday said they had received tremendous response for this year’s tournament with 20 participants coming from the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP).

This year’s competition also features a women’s league.

“We have 40 participants in this year’s competition and we have had an overwhelming response. The preparations are well on course and its promising to be a very entertaining league. This year’s league will include women and we are excited that we have 20 participants from the ZRP,” Mufunda said.

Eight entrants in the men’s league are from Midlands State University in Gweru with eight ladies in the women’s league coming from the police.

The league runs up to December 2 but, however, the organisers said they will not be revealing the sponsor for this year’s tournament at the moment.

Some of the outstanding players that will be featuring the men’s league are Rennie Chikunichawa, Prosper Jaya, Prince Ncube, Keletso Malame, Ronald Munzvengwa and Moses Muti, Shungu Mberengwa, Stephen Chiwanza, Godwell Muhoni, Mike Sibanda and Precious Munhumumwe.

Also in are Nkanyiso Sibanda, Adam and Raggs Joelson, Dave Simba, Gavin Magenga, Zenzo Ndlovu, Stanley Ncube and Nigel Ncube. In the women’s league, the participants include sisters Thembela and Zanele Ndlovu, Samantha Chinyoka and Diana Muusha.

The players are pooled into groups who compete in a round-robin format with the best players meeting in the next stages up to the final of the tournament.
