GOKWE — Fired town secretary Tapiwa Marongwe (37) has been summoned to appear before the magistrates’ court to answer to charges of criminal abuse of office.

His lawyer, Innocent Hore, confirmed the development saying Marongwe would appear in court on November 20 after Gokwe town council preferred new charges against him, three months after he was dismissed from work.

“I can confirm that my client will appear in court on fresh charges of criminal abuse of office, but at the moment we have nothing more to say while waiting for the law to take its course,” said Hore.

Marongwe is accused of using his position in council to vary a tender from $38 000 to $52 000 without going back to the procurement committee in violation of the Urban Councils Act.

“Marongwe authorised the price variation of a new double cab Toyota D4D vehicle from $38 000 to $52 000 from Big Valley and went on to fraudulently register a second hand double cab without advising the procurement committee for deliberations in full council as required by the Urban Councils Act,” reads part of the State outline.

Early this year, Marongwe was acquitted by Kwekwe Provincial magistrate Taurai Manwere of allegations that he connived with Big Valley to steal over $62 000 in a street lights tender scam.

He was, however, found guilty by council which recommended that he be fired following a 10 month-long internal disciplinary process.

Gokwe Town Council is now awaiting approval from the Local Government Board on its recommendation to have Marongwe dismissed.
