GWERU — Officer-in-Charge of Mtapa Police Station in Gweru, Shadman Fungulani, together with three other junior officers, appeared in court yesterday facing charges of stealing gold ore.

Gweru magistrate Mildred Matuvi heard that Fungulani (37) and junior officers Thomas Chademana (47), Owen Sibanda (28) and Elias Mapfumo (31) attached to the Zimbabwe Republic Police’s dog section went to Khumalo Syndicate Mine in Summerset on October 31.
They allegedly removed their vehicle’s number plates, a Mitsubishi Toyota truck, as a disguise.
It is the State case that the police officers dug for gold ore and collected it in four sacks.
However, police details who were on patrol investigating skirmishes at the mine came across the four and arrested them.
Four sacks of gold ore, four shovels and two picks were allegedly recovered in their possession.
The accused persons were granted $200 bail each and are due to appear in court on November 22 for trial.
