MKHUPHALI Masuku has taken over the coaching reins at Caps United Football Club following the immediate ban of Taurai Mangwiro over allegations of match-fixing and illegal betting.

Report by Henry Mhara

Zifa yesterday slapped a 10-year-ban on Mangwiro and three others officials from taking part in all football activities.

The other officials who have been banned are former Warriors striker Zenzo Moyo, Monomotapa team manager Clayton Munemo and former Under-20 team manager Bekithemba “Far” Ndlovu.

Mangwiro and Munemo’s problems emanate from their participation in the Monomotapa tour of Malaysia where the team allegedly masqueraded as a national team. The match was allegedly fixed.

Moyo and Ndlovu are alleged to have fixed matches while with the Young Warriors on the tour of Bulgaria in 2009.

At a Press briefing yesterday, Zifa president Cuthbert Dube said the ban was with immediate effect.

“The aforementioned individuals have since been advised of their bans, and so are their current employers.

The association has also sent communication on the four officials to the Sports and Recreation Commission, Anti-Corruption Commission, Ministry of Education, Sport, Arts and Culture, Cosafa, Caf and Fifa,” Dube said.

He added: “The association would like to implore all affiliates and other members of the family of football to desist, at all costs, from entertaining or hosting individuals who have been banned by the Association. We have advised all our affiliate leagues, events committees and security organs to be on a lookout for banned individuals who may want to sneak into football events and functions.”

Dube said they would hold responsible and punish everyone that hosts the “miscreants” at football events. No official comment could be obtained from Caps United as the club’s chief executive officer Maxwell Mironga was not answering his mobile phone while director Farai Jere was unreachable. Masuku’s immediate task would be to guide the side against high-flying Motor Action at Rufaro Stadium today.

The Mighty Bulls have been going through their best patch of the season of late, winning their last three matches and plundering a whopping 10 goals in the process.

A Caps United source yesterday confirmed that Mangwiro had been replaced by Masuku, who had been his assistant all along.

“Masuku has taken over as a substantive coach with immediate effect. That is the only logical thing to do. We can’t disturb the current set-up any further than what Zifa has done. He will have to choose his assistant,” the source said.
