THE Matabeleland Bodybuilding and Fitness Association will on Saturday select six athletes to represent the region at the first edition of the All-Africa Olympia Zimbabwe contest to be held at the Harare International Conference Centre on November 17. REPORT BY FORTUNE MBELE SPORTS REPORTER

Chairman of the association Tendai Chaipa yesterday said five men and a lady will be selected on Saturday night at Hustlers Leisure Centre in preparation for the biggest ever bodybuilding contest to be held in the country.

“We are picking a team on Saturday to represent Matabeleland on November 17 at the inaugural All-Africa Olympia Zimbabwe tournament to be held in Harare. We are looking at five guys; one lightweight, three middle-weight, one light heavyweight and one lady to make the team that will travel to Harare,” Chaipa said.

Some of the body-builders that will throng Hustlers on Saturday night for selection are former Mr Bulawayo Junior and 2010 Mr Pro Fitness Peter Wenceslaus, Mike Alimu, Hlangabeza Luphahla (light heavyweight), Lovemore Munyamana (lightweight), father and son John (middleweight) and Washington (lightweight) Lunga and junior Delvin Page.

Former Miss Zimbabwe (2007, 2008 and 2009), Charity Juma is favourite to represent Matabeleland in the Miss Fitness category.

“It’s the biggest tournament in Africa so with the biggest cash prizes and the competition will attract bodybuilders from South Africa, Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Mauritius, Botswana Mozambique and probably Angola and Namibia,” Chaipa said.

He said his athletes have been preparing well for the tournament adding that if they do not do well in the competition it will be a good learning curve for the future.

“The guys that I am training have prepared well and it’s up to them to fare well against the guys from outside the country. If they fail then it’s a learning curve for them,” Chaipa said.

Also featuring at the All-Africa Olympia is former Mr Iron Man and Mr Pro Fitness, Gweru’s Isaac “Sugar” Chimuchenga, reigning Mr Iron Man Victor Hungwe and Mr Pro Fitness Victor Kandiero.

Veterans Innocent Choga and Givemore Marume are also expected to take part in the competition.
