Cheteshwar Pujara was not out on 206, an innings reached over eight-and-a-half hours, off 389 deliveries and including 21 boundaries. Graeme Swann finished with 5-144, his 14th test five-wicket haul.
Earlier, England endured another gruelling session in the field as India went to tea on 502 for six.
The visitors did manage to snap up two wickets after lunch with Swann bowling captain MS Dhoni for five, while Samit Patel had Yuvraj Sing caught by Swann for 74.
