Premiership football back in Beitbridge

Sport
THE border town of Beitbridge will welcome Premiership football next year after Central Soccer League (CSL) outfit Tripple B became the second team to gain promotion into top-flight football from Division one.

Army side Black Rhinos were the first.

The Beitbridge side only await confirmation from the country’s football mother body, Zifa. Current CSL log standings indicate that “Tshintsha Magiya” are this year’s champions, and will be flirting with the country’s best next season.

Tshintsha Magiya missed out on promotion into top-flight football last year following an arbitration ruling which gave the stick to Gweru side Hardbody. They are, however, on the verge of kissing goodbye to the Premiership.

Tripple B edged Tongogara 1-0 at Dulibadzimu Stadium on Saturday to take their points tally to 63, eleven clear of second-placed Chapungu and 14 clear of Strikers, who sit on third place with a game in hand.

With three games left before the CSL season ends, the best that Chapungu can achieve — in the event that Tripple B loses all their remaining matches — is 61 points the same number of points Strikers can also manage, which is two points shy of Tripple B’s current tally.

After Tripple B’s victory over Tongogara at the weekend, which heralded a new footballing era for the border town, Tripple B’s Facebook page wall was awash with congratulatory messages from the team’s fans and sympathisers.

On the opposite side of the table, Blanket Mine and Jessie Mine have been relegated to Division Two.

Blanket Mine received a 7-0 drubbing at the hands of Chrome Stars at Blanket Stadium to remain on 14th position with 15 points, a single point above log anchors Jessie Mine, who were beaten 2-1 by Chapungu.

Air Stars’ relegation woes mounted after they were edged 1-0 by Silo United to remain on 13th position with 19 points.

The army side, however, have a mathematical chance of survival and will be hoping that MSU, who were beaten 2-0 by FC Platinum, U-19, will continue with their losing streak while Air Stars win their last games.

If that scenario transpires, Air Stars will finish the season with 28 points while MSU, who are on 12th position, will slip into relegation with 15 points.

Army side Tongogara are also not safe from the chop yet. They are tied on 25 points with MSU and just like the academics, they need to win two of the remaining matches to be safe from the chop.

WhaWha eased their relegation worries by posting a crucial 2-0 home victory over Town United, while Strikers overcame New ZimSteel 2-1 at Torwood Stadium, to complete the weekend’s CSL fixtures.
