LUPANE — A Zimbabwe Statistics Agency (ZimStat) employee, who bought beer at a Lupane outlet using a fake $50, was last week convicted and sentenced to 30 days in jail or $150 fine for fraud.

Andrew Jawett Kwidini (age not given) of Baobab, Hwange, pleaded not guilty to a fraud charge when he appeared before Lupane magistrate Takudzwa Gwazemba.

State prosecutor Sanders Sibanda told the court that on September 7, Kwidini went to Lupane Beer Garden with the fake note.

The ZimStat employee then tendered the fake money to the bar attendant, Sibusisiwe Ndebele, to buy beer.

The offence came to light when Ndebele’s colleague Mthandazo Tshuma became suspicious of the genuineness of the money, checked it and discovered it was fake. A report was made to the police, leading to Kwidini’s arrest.
