A PART of Zanu PF’s provincial headquarters in Bulawayo caught fire on Thursday, reportedly destroying records and party cards.

Party insiders believe it would now be difficult to conduct an audit of the party’s activities, considering that it was the finance office that was affected.

“It is curious that only the finance office was burnt when it is the last office within the building, giving the impression that someone got inside the premises and entered the building to destroy records,” said a party insider.

“A lot of questions have been raised on whether the money collected from members who have been buying cards has  been banked or properly accounted for and efforts to reconcile the cards and the money will not be possible,” he said.

Addressing party supporters in Hwange early this month,Mines minister and Zanu PF politburo member Obert Mpofu alleged the selling of cards was unclear.

“Some leaders say the province is experiencing a crisis, cannot attract more people. This is not true. Some leaders who feel very much threatened are hiding party cards from the people,” Mpofu alleged.

“This would seem as if people are shunning the party. No! Some people are scared of calling meetings as they fear being removed from their positions. This is being done for personal gains at the expense of the party.” Ndlovu commended the Fire Brigade for their prompt reaction, saying they helped contain a possible disaster.

“The situation is very bad, files and file cabinets were destroyed and they are heaped at the headquarters,” said Ndlovu.

Contacted for comment, Bulawayo provincial police spokesperson Inspector Mandlenkosi Moyo yesterday said investigations were still underway.

“We are appealing to anyone with information on the matter to contact the police,” he said.

Meanwhile, Zanu PF ministers are set to visit Bulawayo province this weekend to hold meetings with supporters and “hear their concerns”.
