The Standard is a subsidiary of Alpha Media Holdings (AMH) which also publishes NewsDay and the Zimbabwe Independent.
Event organiser Sichelesile Bafana said the charity walk was aimed at fund-raising for two old peoples’ homes in Bulawayo — Ekuphumuleni and Entembeni.
“People are neglecting the elderly in our community and we realise that those people are in need of companionship,” Bafana said.
AMH Bulawayo branch manager Peter Dube yesterday said: “We basically wanted to support the elderly as we felt that it was one of the most prominent ways of making an impact in the community. And looking at their budget constraints, we wanted to alleviate their problems.”
The charity walk was sponsored by Fawcett Security, Emirates Ambulance Services, Bootlebay Marketing, Radio Dialogue, Mbizo Meats and Hillside Dams Nature Park.
“Mbizo Meats donated 100kg of maize, while Bootlebay Marketing provided us with water for refreshments. We would also like to thank Fawcett for donating $500 to Ekuphumuleni Old People’s Home. In addition, they have promised to service cars belonging to the old people’s home for a year,” Dube said.
