Melissa Shumba from National University of Science and Technology was on Saturday night crowned Miss Universities 2012 at a colourful event held at Ochi City in the capital.

The lanky 26-year-old beauty shrugged off stiff competition from 23 other contestants from different universities who were vying for the same title.
Chengetai Gunguwo from Midlands State University became the first princess as well as Miss Personality while Montolo Mohale from University of Zimbabwe was crowned the second princess and Rumbidzai Ngwenya from University of Zimbabwe became Miss Talent.
Shumba walked away with a Nissan March, half tonne mealie-meal,Laptop, $1 000, $1 200 scholarship tuition courtesy of FBC Bank, blackberry, Executive Diploma in Bussiness Leadership and many hampers.
She will also represent Zimbabwe in the Miss Universities Africa finals which are expected to be held in Gabon next year. Shumba, a Bachelor of Engineering in Textile Technology student failed to hold back the tears after her name was called out as the winner. “This is just a miracle and I can’t believe I have landed the top spot. There were many girls in the camp and sometimes I would say to myself am I going to do it.
“I give glory to God who has given me this opportunity,” she said wiping off tears.”
Artists that performed at the venue include Sulumani and Saiwe Chimbetu, Mudiwa Mutandwa, Ba Shupi, Bulawayo Kwela Calabash and Born Free Crew.
