Shabanie Mine, Buffaloes share spoils

SHABANIE Mine were left frustrated after recording their second consecutive home draw when they were held by Buffaloes in a Castle Lager Premier Soccer League match at Maglas Stadium yesterday.

Shabanie surged ahead two-nil courtesy of strikes by Farai Mususunye and top goal scorer Nelson Mazivisa on either half, but the visitors found a way back through Michael Mageja and Prosper Matizanadzo. Shabanie really should have won this match had they made good use of the chances created.

But some tinkering by coach Luke Masomere, who relegated Mazivisa to the bench combining Mususunye and Francis Kanda at the point of attacking, did not pay dividends. After suffering a crushing defeat at the hands of champions Dynamos last week, Shabanie needed to collect all three points and they showed intent in the first half where they attacked and created many, but converted just one.

After dominating play, Shabanie got the breakthrough when Mususunye benefited from a Raymond Sibanda cross on 22 minutes to fire home. The home side continued pushing forward and their dominance deserved a better margin lead yet the second goal only arrived 15 minutes after the break.

Masomere pulled off Mususunye for Mazivisa 10 minutes after the break and five minutes later the leading goal scorer was presented with an opportunity to add to his tally when Shabanie were awarded a penalty kick after Muchineripi Wayerera had handled in the box. At that point it looked like Shabanie had bagged the points, but Buffaloes fought to the end.Shabanie were punished by one of their former players Mageja who was at the end of a Jeffery Takunda layoff after a swift counter-attack move, for the attacker to tap in on 70 minutes.

With five minutes remaining on the clock, Matizanadzo levelled matters with a header from a corner kick to break the home side’s hearts.
