SPAR Zimbabwe, the title sponsors of the Zimbabwe Sevens Rugby team, will bankroll the local series in what is seen as an initiative to help further develop the shorter version of the game.

The three-legged series will be held on consecutive weekends starting with the first leg on Saturday with the second leg  taking place at  the Harare Country Club (October 20) before the finale at Harare Sports Club (October 27).

The series which has prize money of $3 000 was officially launched last night.

Local clubs which will take part in the tourney include Old Georgians Sports Club, Harare Sports Club, Old Hararians, Old Miltonians, Matabeleland Warriors and Gweru Sports Club.

The series is seen as of strategic importance to the Zimbabwe Sevens team’s preparations for the IRB World Sevens Series legs in Dubai, South Africa and Hong Kong in the lead up to their participation at next year’s IRB Sevens Rugby World Cup in Russia.

Local rugby giants Old Georgians have dominated the Spar Summers series in recent years and will be eager to do well after missing out on any silverware during the XVs season.

They will face stiff resistance from Harare Sports Club, who also boost of quality players who are well suited to that form of the game.

Old Georgians lifted this year’s first part of the series in February after piping bitter rivals Harare Sports Club on points’ difference.
