NORTHERN Region Division One log leaders Black Rhinos effectively put one hand on the title after their 1-0 triumph over DC Academy at Hellenics on Saturday.

By Sports Reporter The win saw Rhinos opening up a 10-point lead at the top of the log with 56 points. With just five rounds of matches to go, the army side need to win their next two matches to attain an unassailable 62 points.

Midfielder Lot Chiunga scored the priceless goal in the first half as Rhinos edged close to the title.

What makes it interesting for Rhinos is that they can wrap up the championship at home, as their next two matches are at One Commando.

They welcome struggling Blue Jets first in what appears an easy contest for the soldiers before hosting fourth-placed ZPC Kariba a week later.

While the match against the Kariba side is a tricky one, assistant coach Matsika Ndega said the prospect of winning the championship alone will be enough motivation on the day.

“The title is now in our hands,” said Matsika yesterday. “Our win over DC Academy was a crucial one and I don’t see us losing it now.

“Blue Jets will be a tough match because it’s an army team and derbies are always difficult. But we have a lot to play for, so I believe we will win this army derby,” added Matsika.

Rhinos walloped Jets 4-0 in the reverse fixture, but were on the receiving end against ZPC Kariba, losing the match 3-2.
