Rapist teens record own crime

FIVE Westlea teenagers appeared at the Harare Magistrates’ Court on Monday this week accused of gang-raping a 17-year-old girl and recorded the sexual assaults using a mobile phone.

Three of the teenagers, whose identities have been withheld, were charged alongside Tatenda Mahlengwe (19) and Gift Leroy Masango (18).

The five teenagers are said to have watched pornographic videos before three of them took turns to sexually attack the girl, while recording their act using a mobile phone camera.

All the five suspects were not asked to plead to the rape charge when they appeared before Harare magistrate Anita Tshuma.

They were released into their parents’ custody and remanded to October 22 for trial after prosecutor Michael Reza conceded they were all school-going teenagers.

Allegations against the teenagers are that on September 28 this year, the complainant was on her way home from school when she met one of the teenagers who asked her to accompany him to Masango’s place of residence.

When the two arrived at Masango’s place, they met Mahlengwe who was in the company of the three others.

It is alleged that immediately Mahlengwe and one of the teenagers undressed the girl and dragged her into Masango’s bedroom where they took turns to rape her. After the act, the court heard, they went into the dining room where they started watching pornographic films.

It is alleged Mahlengwe told his friends that the films had aroused him again and he wanted more sex. They dragged the girl into the bedroom and raped her again.

The girl informed her cousin three days later, leading to the teenagers’ arrest.
