POLICE in Matabeleland North yesterday allegedly blocked the Welshman Ncube-led MDC from holding a campaign rally in Lupane East, citing manpower shortage.

MDC national spokesperson Nhlanhla Dube said the rally scheduled to be held at Lake Alice was cancelled on the grounds that police were preparing for President Robert Mugabe’s expected tour of Victoria Falls today or tomorrow.
“Police said that they had no manpower to provide security for the MDC rally because Robert Mugabe would be in Victoria Falls, thus they had deployed all the police officers there,” Dube said.
Ironically, Lupane and Victoria Falls fall within two separate police administrative districts.
“We are aware that as our party is growing rapidly and those that are opposed to democracy will make an effort to overturn our revolutionary train (from attaining) a just and a fair Zimbabwe which is the dream of our people,” Dube said.
“The MDC’s commitment to a just and a fair Zimbabwe remains undiluted and our attention will not be diverted by these desperate actions by the surrogates of the failing Zanu PF.”
Officer commanding Tsholotsho district – under which Lupane falls – Chief Superintendent Johannes Gowo said he was not aware of the matter.
