Taka, as he was affectionately known by colleagues, passed away yesterday evening at the Ray of Hope Clinic in Avondale, Harare.

His mother, Sarah Muparutsa, said Cledwyn succumbed to renal carcinoma, a form of cancer which he was diagnosed with five months ago.

“Taka passed on at around 6pm while we were here during hospital visiting hours. We are all extremely devastated,” she said. The Editor-in-Chief for Alpha Media Holdings (AMH), which publishes NewsDay, Vincent Kahiya, said Muparutsa’s death had come as a shock to the AMH group and NewsDay had lost a staffer who was hard to replace.

“We have lost a rare talent on our sub editors’ desk,” Kahiya said. “Taka played an invaluable role during the early days of NewsDay and was a stickler when it came to detail and processes on the subs’ desk.

“Journalism, especially the small fraternity of experienced sub editors in this country, is poorer without Taka. We share in grief with his wife and the Muparutsa family.”

NewsDay Editor Constantine Chimakure last night said: “While we all know that death is an immutable law of life, the passing-on of Taka is very painful to the NewsDay family. He was dedicated, determined and devoted to duty. It is a sad loss to the journalistic fraternity.”

The Zimbabwe Union of Journalists said they were saddened by the death of Muparutsa, who once worked for the defunct Daily Mirror and The Daily News.

Muparutsa is survived by his wife Tsitsi and six children. Funeral and burial arrangements had not yet been established last night as the family was still getting together.
