The bike exploded on impact and the outrider was burnt beyond recognition.  The incident is the fourth involving the Presidential motorcade so far this year.

National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba confirmed the accident.

Charamba said: “I can confirm the accident which happened at the corner of Borrowdale and Dungervoi West roads involving the lead biker of the Presidential motorcade and a T35 lorry.  It was a fatal accident and next of kin are yet to be informed, so we can’t give the name of the deceased.”

When NewsDay arrived at the scene of the accident, both the deceased and the bike had been removed and the spot cleared.

The driver of the T35 lorry involved in the accident, Cliff Moyo, told NewsDay:  “It was the first bike of the motorcade which was behind me and it hit the side of the truck. I was driving along Borrowdale Road and wanted to turn right when I heard a loud sound and the next thing I saw was fire.”

Witnesses said the lead biker, who was trying to clear the road for the Presidential motorcade, rammed into the lorry.

Recently, one person was killed and 15 others injured by Mugabe’s motorcade in the third such accident in two weeks.

Two weeks earlier, another motorbike in the Presidential cavalcade hit and killed a mentally disturbed man, while a member of the Presidential Guard died and seven others were injured when a truck in the motorcade overturned after one of its tyres burst.

Mugabe typically travels with an escort of over 15 vehicles, including the Presidential limousine, a Mercedes Benz, motorcycles and army vehicles.
