Matabeleland South acting police spokesperson Sergeant Nkosilathi Sibanda said the incident happened on Tuesday at around 9am.

He identified the deceased as John Sibanda from Colleen Bawn. It is understood that on the fateful day, Sibanda was working in the garden with his wife Joyce (42), alongside Richard Mudenda (33) when he spotted a kudu being chased by dogs and a group of other villagers.

The police said the now-deceased and Mudenda joined the chase and followed the kudu into the dam where it had sought refuge.

“The kudu plunged into the dam,” the police said. “John and Mudenda followed it inside the dam and John drowned. After swimming for about 100 metres John got tired and drowned. Mudenda realised the danger and swam out of the dam.”

Sibanda said the deceased’s body was retrieved from the dam by the Fairbridge police sub aqua unit. The police urged the public to desist from swimming in open waters.
