Kujatana 21km Peace Half Marathon postponed

THE fifth edition of the Kujatana Nkubotu 21km Peace Half Marathon in Binga will be held in December as the organisers of the event, Twalumba Holdings, intend to make it bigger and accommodate some of their strategic business units (SBUs) that are tied up this time of the year.

Miriam Sibanda, the race convener, yesterday said they wanted to make the event bigger as they marked the race’s fifth year.

The event is usually run to coincide with the International Day of Peace (September 21), but, last year’s was held in October.

“We have changed dates so that we accommodate some of our SBUs and want to celebrate to mark our five years. We have 16 players that are with Twalumba FC (Zifa Northern Region Division One) who are at school and eight of those are registered to play in the league.

”We just want to have more this year as we will be inviting musicians from Zambia and a local big artiste. We would have held it in October, but the race will be held in December when there is no pressure,” Sibanda said.

Twalumba FC players, formerly Highfield United, last year graced the event.

She said they wanted to ensure that bookings and logistics for the artistes in Zambia, who have indicated that they would be free in December, was done on time and to allow for registration of athletes to be done efficiently after last year’s late registration process.

Sibanda, however, said the race would, however, not go international this year even after getting International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) certification as the race had to be expansively marketed before invitation of athletes from across the border.

Earlier indications were that the race would be moved to this month to give athletes who participated in the 2012 London Olympics time to rest.

Cuthbert Nyasango, last year’s Kujatana Nkubotu winner and runner-up Wirimai Juwawo, took part in the London Olympics.
