MUTARE — A 37-year-old Zimunya man is reportedly on the run following allegations that he waylaid and raped a 16-year-old blind juvenile in full view of her eight-year-old aide before threatening them with violence if they spilled the beans.

Manicaland provincial police spokesperson Inspector Enock Chishiri yesterday confirmed the incident, which happened early this month, and identified the suspect as Taurai Chari of Temberere village under Chief Zimunya.

Chishiri said police have since launched a manhunt for Chari.

According to police, Chari waylaid the complainant who was being led to her homestead by her eight-year-old aide around 5pm on October 7.

“The accused suddenly appeared from the bush and grabbed the complainant from behind. He tripped her to the ground and raped her once while her aide was watching. After the offence, he left the complainant lying on the ground and vanished into the bush,” said Chishiri.

The complainant, however, reported the abuse to the suspect’s wife who, in turn, assaulted her accusing her of framing her husband. Two weeks later, the complainant reported the matter to a churchmate who then assisted her to make a police report.
