Northern Region Division One log leaders Black Rhinos put one hand on the title after beating Eiffel Flats 1-0 at One Commando on Saturday to open a nine-point lead at the top of the log.

Report by Henry Mhara Sports Reporter Former Warriors player Lazarus Muhoni scored the priceless goal, an effort that was made more significant by the fact that second-placed DStv Rangers lost their match away to Skylink.

The army side have now amassed 53 points against Rangers’ 44, with six games left to play.

Rhinos’ assistant coach Matsika Ndega yesterday boldly declared his side were now favourites for the title.

“After the weekend’s result, I can safely say we are the favourites now. We are nine points clear at the top and if we can win three of our remaining games, I think we will be champions. The title is ours to lose now,” Ndega said.

Black Rhinos’ next match is against seventh-placed DC Academy and Ndega anticipates a tough match.

Rhinos were 2-0 winners when the two sides met in the reverse fixture.

“We won the first match, but it will be a different game altogether. It’s another tough match on our way because DC are currently playing very well. But the boys were motivated by the weekend win and the prospect of winning the league, so I expect them to carry on from where they left,” said Ndega.

While Rhinos will be at DC Academy, DStv have a perfect opportunity to recover from their recent slump in form when they host basement side Aces Youth Academy.

Rangers have collected just two points from their last three matches to give Rhinos the edge on the title race. The Shame Nemasango-coached side are now in danger of losing second position on the log to Power Masters and ZPC Kariba, who are both tied on 43 points.
