SA President Jacob Zuma’s facilitation team which was in the country on Monday to meet principals to the GPA, left empty-handed as President Mugabe and the PM were out of the country.

SOUTH African President Jacob Zuma’s facilitation team was in the country on Monday to meet principals to the Global Political Agreement, but went back empty-handed as President Robert Mugabe and Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai were out of the country.

They only managed to see MDC leader Welshman Ncube, who yesterday confirmed his meeting with the Mac Maharaj-led facilitation team. “The team was sent by President Zuma to get a briefing on the situation in the country,” said Ncube.

“They wanted to see if we had made any progress so that they can report to a Sadc summit that will be held before the African Union (AU) summit in January next year.

“Sadc will need to apprise the AU on the political and security issues within its area of jurisdiction and Zimbabwe is one of the issues.”

Ncube said the team would need to meet Mugabe and Tsvangirai to have an appreciation of the situation on the ground.

Tsvangirai is in Nigeria, while Mugabe left the country for Uganda soon after the burial of Higher and Tertiary Education minister Stan Mudenge on Monday.
