London Olympic finalist Wirimayi Zhuwawo will be among a cast of stars at the prestigious Tanganda 21 kilometre half marathon race set for Mutare on Sunday.
Report by Kenneth Nyangani
Zhuwawo, who came 15th at the global sporting event recently, is expecting stiff competition from his close rival and long time friend Cuthbert Nyasango, who also had a commendable outing at the Olympics after coming seventh.
Other stars who are expected to grace the tournament are former Africa University peace marathon champion Charles Soza, Millen Matende, Manicaland Diamond race champion Lyno Muchena, Samuel Pezani, Nkosiyazi Sibanda, among others.
The race will be used as one of the qualifying events for local athletes for the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) World Marathon race which is scheduled for Bulgaria early next month.
Zhuwawo spoke to NewsDay Sport yesterday about his chances. He, however, said that he is not underrating other athletes, but believes that they should brace for a tough challenge from him.
“I am very confident that I m going to do well at the Tanganda 21km half Marathon. I will be banking on my form after a rather good show at the Olympics,” he said.
