Nyanga South MP Willard Chimbetete (MDC-T) has accused Zanu PF officials in the constituency of distributing donor-funded drought relief food on political party lines.

Nyanga South MP Willard Chimbetete (MDC-T) has accused Zanu PF officials in the constituency of distributing donor-funded drought relief food on political party lines.

Report by Obey Manayiti

Chimbetete said some residents in the constituency who had gone to receive donor-funded food aid at St Mary business centre in Nyanga South were denied the food assistance on the presumption that they were MDC-T supporters. But Nyanga district administrator John Makoni, who confirmed receiving Chimbetete’s complaints, promised to investigate the matter. “I heard about that and we are investigating on what really happened. Appropriate action will be taken after full investigations,” he said. Chimbetete said: “On Thursday, 43 people who had gone to receive donor-funded food at St Mary business centre in ward 30, Nyanga South, were each denied receipt of a 50kg bag of maize each on the basis that they are presumed MDC-T supporters. “They were disqualified by known Zanu PF officials in Nyanga. The 43 bags of maize were then shared among the Zanu PF officials who told these people to go and receive food from (MDC-T leader Prime Minister) Morgan Tsvangirai.

On Friday, I went to meet Nyanga district administrator and he promised to investigate the issue. However, such behaviour causes havoc in hunger-stricken areas. We are all citizens of this country and such partisanship should not be allowed at all.”
