Zifa Northern Region Division One Soccer log leaders Black Rhinos recorded an important draw against closest rivals DStv Rangers on Wednesday to maintain their commanding seven-point lead at the top of the log, but assistant coach Ndega Matsika said his team “were not champions yet”.

Report by Henry Mhara Next up for Black Rhinos is a home match against fifth placed Twalumba at One Commando tomorrow.

Lot Chiunga’s header 10 minutes from time could prove to be the most important goal for the army side when the season comes to an end as it cancelled a Manuel Meleka’s strike early in the second half. If DStv had managed to hold on to their lead, they could have narrowed the gap to just four points and unsettled Rhinos’ nerves.

“It was a difficult and close match. I’m happy that we managed to get a point. We were hoping to win the match and open a 10 point gap, but considering that DStv has been our bogey side, we were satisfied with the result,” said Matsika. The draw saw Rhinos adding their points tally to 49, while DStv are on 42 points with nine games left to play, but Matsika believed it was too early to pop the champagne.

“We are nearing the end, but we are not yet champions. Up until a point where we open a 10-point lead, then we can’t even be calling ourselves favourites.” Twalumba will go into the match buoyed by their 5-0 thrashing of Blue Jets on Wednesday. Matsika is not worried.

“We are not looking much into that result and it will be also very foolish for them to use that as their basis to prepare for our meeting. It will be a new ball game and we have everything to play for. It is going to be a tough match, but we will try our best to win,” said Matsika.

Rhinos will welcome back midfielder Walter Masenda who missed the DStv Rangers match through suspension.

“His absence was felt especially considering that he has played almost every minute of our matches this season. Our midfield department is built around him and he makes things happen so we are obviously happy that he will be back for the next match,” Matsika said.
