Reigning Zimbabwe Volleyball Association (ZVA) national league champions in the men’s category, Railstars, have pulled out of the league citing financial constraints.
Report by Sports Reporter ZVA national league chairman Brian Manuel confirmed the development to NewsDay Sport yesterday.
“Railstars are not playing in the national league this year because of financial constraints. They did not pay the affiliation fees of $500 because their main problem is footing the travelling expenses,” he said.
“However, Railstars will represent the country in the Zone V1 Club Championships set for Zambia in December this year because they were automatic qualifiers after performing well in the club championships in Namibia last year.”
The 2012 edition of the league started last week.
Railstars were outstanding in the league last year and clinched the league title under the guidance of Itsanang Abu-Basutu.
They carried on with their good show in the Zone VI Club Championships in Namibia, where they beat Agotso from Botswana, Botswana Defence Forces, KNVC, Red Skins, but bowed out of the competition after losing 3-1 to Botswana’s Diphatsa.
Stanbic Thunder also represented Zimbabwe in the men’s section, while the women’s section representatives were Panthers, JS Harare and Jewels. However, Railstars would remain active as they are playing in the Bulawayo Volleyball Association league.
