MDC-T Bulawayo provincial chairman Gorden Moyo has delivered a stinging attack on Zanu PF over its stance on the devolution of power in the new constitution saying the party was swimming against the tide.

Report by Staff Reporter Moyo, who was speaking at the Bulawayo Press Club on Monday, said the majority of Zimbabweans favoured the proposed system of governance instead of a centralised one. “When you say you are against devolution of power, you are against the people,” he said. “If you talk empowerment and not devolution of power, you are empty. 82% of the people in Zimbabwe said they want devolution of power, who are you to say you are against devolution? You are not their leader. If you can’t listen to them, then you are not their leader. You have to devolve power and not just administration. The future of this country lies in devolution of power. Moyo said it was important for the media to “fully discuss” devolution of power instead of focusing on “people’s affairs”. “As political parties and opinion leaders, we shouldn’t be claiming the debate of the people,” he said. “If we rise above party politics we will do better. Let’s discuss issues and not tissues. It is difficult everyday to read about people’s affairs and weddings. Let us fly above the weather. My party is ready to participate at the Second All Stakeholders’ Conference” “Devolution is already there. I do not doubt. I am not going to be a doubting Thomas to check if Jesus has wounds. Jesus had wounds. Devolution is already there in the document that we have.” Moyo said when his party celebrates its 13th anniversary in Bulawayo on Saturday it will “celebrate its achievements and also commemorate those who have paid a price for the achievements”. “It has been a tough 13 years,” he said. “Zanu PF has behaved like Herod. When Herod heard that a king has been born, he sent around an army killing every innocent child. We have been through 13 years of brutality and 13 years of military siege.”
