NKAYI— Villagers in Nkayi are living in fear after a stray lion invaded the area, killing over 40 cattle in a short space of time.

By Staff Reporter “People are living in consistent fear due to the presence of a lion here,” said Nkayi Rural District Council chairman Kufakwezwe Ncube in an interview.

“As we speak, it has so far killed more than 40 cattle and we now fear that human lives are in danger.

“We appeal to the authorities to arrest the situation and save the people from this dangerous animal.”

Ncube said they had reported the matter to the Zimbabwe National Parks and Wildlife Management Authority, but the lion had not yet been captured.

In a related incident, villagers in Zhukwe area in Gwanda said they had also lost several goats to baboons.

“We now fear that as these baboons seem to be starving they will end up eating our children,” said a villager, Antipas Ndlovu.

Zimparks spokesperson Caroline Washaya-Moyo could not be reached for comment as her mobile phone went unanswered.
