Zimbabwe’s Sevens rugby team put up a brave show at the Middleburg Sevens tournament in South Africa at the weekend before going down 33-7 to and IRB Sevens Rugby World Cup holders Wales in the Cup semi-final on Saturday.

The Cheetahs, as the team is affectionately known were using the tourney to prepare for this weekend’s 2013 Sevens Rugby World Cup qualifiers in Morocco.

The Gilbert Nyamutsamba-coached side did well despite missing the services of key players. Germany-based Manasah Sita and the South Africa-based duo of Mike Morris and Graham Kaulback all missed out due to injury while Scotland-based Gerald Sibanda was also missing after recently completing a move with a Scottish side.

This gave the Cheetahs’ technical department a chance to try out some new combinations.

The new players and some fringe players in the side responded well as the Cheetahs’ campaign got off to a flying start after winning all their three pool matches on Friday with wins over Botswana (38-0), Pumas Barbarians (61-0) and Pumas (21-12).

The three comfortable wins set the Cheetahs up for a date against South African Buffaloes in the Cup quarter-finals which they won 35-12. That would, however, be the Cheetahs’ last win in the tournament as they went on to lose to Wales in the semi-finals.
