Caps target Mbada

Caps United have set their sights on reaching the final of the Mbada Diamonds Cup and are confident of defeating last season’s runners-up Motor Action when they clash in the first round at Trojan Stadium, Bindura, tomorrow.

Report by Tawanda Tafirenyika The former “Cup Kings” appear to have their confidence back after winning their last Premier Soccer League match 2-1 against Midlands side Hardbody on Tuesday. They had gone for a lengthy barren spell stretching to eight winless games — their worst performance since the turn of the millennium. The poor run had also dragged the team to the relegation zone. However, the victory over Hardbody has generated hope that they can escape the chop and even finish in the top eight by the end of the campaign. Goalkeepers coach Brenna Msiska said at the club’s weekly Press conference yesterday Caps had disappointed their supporters for too long and were targeting to reach the final of the richest football knockout tournament in the country to appease them. Msiska described the clash as a do-or-die  and reckoned that Motor Action would be favourites after reaching the final of the lucrative cup in which they were beaten to the trophy by Dynamos. “It’s the team to beat. They played in the final last season and we have to work hard. But our target is to reach the final because we feel we have disappointed our supporters for too long and need to work hard to at least reach the final of the cup.” “We need their support for this game and we are appealing to them to come in numbers to support the team,” said Msiska. Msiska said while their victory over Hardbody in the league had motivated the team, they still needed to work hard as the Mbada Diamonds Cup was a different ball game. “This is a cup game and is different from league games. It’s a one-off game, a do-or-die and the better team on the day will win. We are, however, confident of advancing to the next round,” he said. Midfielder Tawanda Munyanduri told reporters at the same conference that the players were eager to reinstall Caps United as the Cup Kings. He said they were aware that it was the status the club got  for regularly winning cup tournaments in the past. “Every player is aware that there is need to bring the club back to its position as the Cup Kings. We are all motivated to win against Motor Action,” he said. Caps United will be without Edmore Chapfungamoyo, who is still on the treatment table with a calf injury.  But Evans Gwekwerere is back to fitness and could play a part against the Mighty Bulls. The chairperson of the Caps Supporters’ Association Harare chapter, Onismos Matsika, said they were arranging transport for the supporters to go and cheer the team.
