Celebrating beauty with brains

Twenty nine students from various universities in the country will contest for the Miss Universities beauty pageant set for Ochi City on October 6.

Report by Melissa Mpofu Entertainment Reporter Models were drawn from the University of Zimbabwe, Midlands State University, Women’s University, Bindura, Gwanda, Masvingo and Chinhoyi universities. This year, organisers only took contestants from universities as compared to previous years when they also accepted other contestants from polytechnic colleges. For the first time, this year’s contest also roped in models from the National University of Science and Technology.

While in camp, models will visit Nyanga, receive free grooming lessons and listen to presentations from influential modelling and business gurus to help widen their knowledge on various issues. Last year, models had presentations from modelling guru Kiki Divaris and businessman Philip Chiyangwa among others.

The models are expected to converge in Harare on Friday for the boot camp and sashing ceremony at Ochi City. Ochi City – along Domboshava Road – has been the official home of the pageant for the past three years.

One of the pageant organisers Prominence Makaza said the event – which is now a top-notch brand – was born out of the need to celebrate beauty with brains after the realisation that most models at some local pageants were failing to answer general questions about their country and its natural resources.

“This year’s edition will be bigger and better than the previous ones, considering the queen will walk away with a car as one of her prizes. Other prizes will include cash, laptops and mobile phones for the top three contestants, courtesy of Goldtech Electronics,” Makaza said.

Dendera musician Sulumani Chimbetu and his sister Saiwe, as well as Shastro, will perform during the event while DJ Romeo will be on the decks. Pageant organisers are also in the process of luring Big Brother Stargame Kenyan housemate Prezzo to grace the event.

Miss Universities has proved to be a success after the first edition produced 2011 Miss Tourism Zimbabwe Rumbidzai Mudzengerere and Miss Universe Zimbabwe Lisa Morgan.

Like in previous years, Miss Universities will automatically qualify to contest in the Miss Universities Africa pageant and the Miss Zimbabwe pageant. Last year’s winner Ntokozo Sithole walked away with $2 000, a laptop and a full-year’s tuition bursary courtesy of FBC bank.
