Premiership football side Buffaloes gaffer Saul Chaminuka survived the axe after the team’s executive withdrew their threat to fire him if he did not collect at least seven points from three matches.

The nomadic former Masvingo United coach collected five points from a possible nine.

The army side defeated Blue Rangers 1-0 in Mutare three weeks ago before they were held to a goalless draw by relegation candidates Quelaton a week later in the City of Kings.

Then, last Sunday they presented Caps United with their first point in eight matches after they were held to a goalless draw at Sakubva Stadium.

Buffaloes spokesperson Tendai Chitowa confirmed the development to NewsDay Sport yesterday, adding that they had now tasked the technical department to end the season in the top five.

“Yes, we met today (yesterday) as the team executive members to discuss the fate of the coach, but we found out that after we gave our coach the three-match ultimatum there was more unity and everyone was working together for the better of the team,” he said.

“We are now giving our coach another chance since we also noted that in the last three games we did not lose a match. Actually they collected five points which is not that bad, but we will be expecting them to collect more as we have set our target to end the season in the top five,” Chitowa said.

Buffaloes are currently lying on the sixth position on the log standings with 33 points from 20 matches.
