A policewoman based in Chitungwiza recently fell prey to a suspected two-man gang which allegedly waylaid, robbed and raped her in a bushy area near Braeside in Harare.

The incident allegedly occurred on July 31 this year.

One of the suspects, Joe Sikhonyana Mpofu (29), was not asked to plead to robbery and rape charges when he appeared before Harare magistrate Anita Tshuma last Friday.

The court remanded him in custody to September 14 after prosecutor Tungamirai Chakurira opposed bail, arguing Mpofu could interfere with police investigations since his alleged accomplice Clive Zindoga was still at large.

Mpofu was arrested last week after a month-long search that involved tracking down the victim’s cellphone line which the suspect allegedly continued using after committing the crime.

Allegations against Mpofu were that on the day in question, he was in the company of Zindoga at around 6pm, when they stalked the female cop just after she alighted from a vehicle at the corner of Seke and Dieppe roads on her way to Epworth.

It is alleged the pair grabbed the woman and stole her cellphone and $1 before dragging her into a bushy area where they threatened to stab her if she turned down their sexual demands.

Mpofu allegedly undressed the woman before they gang-raped her and fled the scene after she fell unconscious.

After she regained consciousness, she reported the matter at Braeside Police Station.

Two suspects last week also appeared in court on similar allegations involving another female police officer.
