A local private voluntary organisation, Vision and Hope Foundation (VHF), says it has secured $100 000 from a foreign partner for construction of a secondary school at an informal settlement at Hopley Farm on the outskirts of Harare.
VHS programmes director Godfrey Mungazi told NewsDay last week construction of the school would start next January with the institution set to open its doors to the public in 2014 with an initial enrolment of about 300 students.
“We realised that need after taking stock of the primary school population here,” he said.
“We also realised their difficulty in being absorbed in secondary schools elsewhere and the negative impact of such a scenario on students.
“After a lot of searching locally, we managed to find a donor who pledged to assist us with $100 000 as the initial grant for the construction of the school.
“Our foreign partners were in the country to assess first-hand the obtaining situation.
“It is refreshing to note that more funds will be availed as and when required.”
VHF provides school requirements for about 400 needy pupils in and around Harare, mostly targeting residents of Mbare and Sunningdale.
