The MDC-T says it is targeting churches and other social gatherings as it intensifies its membership recruitment drive in Bulawayo.

Mandla Sibanda, the MDC-T provincial spokesperson, confirmed the new strategy in an interview with NewsDay on Firday.

“We started the recruitment and voter registration education in June this year and the programme has seen us getting over 400 new members per district almost daily and issuing more than 3 000 membership cards per month in the province,” he said.

Sibanda said recruitment was part of preparations for harmonised elections that are likely to be held next year.

“We have recruitment and information committees in the wards, districts and branches doing all the work for the party and we have covered a lot of ground,” he said.

“We are also taking the draft constitution to the people, but we are not auditing it like Zanu PF.”

“We indicate the positives of it and the bad in comparison to the Lancaster House-adopted constitution and people show support for the draft.”

Sibanda also dismissed reports that MDC-T was losing ground in the city to the Welshman Ncube-led MDC after some of its members defected to the smaller faction.

“MDC-T is a very strong party and people must not expect it to die easily like that. We are still in control of Bulawayo and now will emerge stronger during the elections,” he said.
