A 31-year-old man from Inyathi appeared in court on Thursday, facing charges of raping his sister-in-law once and trying to bribe her with $20 so that she would not divulge the incident.

The man, from Good Hope Village 4, was not asked to plead to rape charges when he appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Shepherd Mjanja. He was remanded in custody to August 17.

The court heard that on July 29 this year at 5pm, the accused found the complainant — whose age was not given in court — bathing in the Queens area of Inyathi, where she is employed.

She told her brother-in-law that she was preparing to go and see her aunt at Salucky Mine in Inyathi.

The accused told her he was going in the same direction as he wanted to collect a debt from someone in the area.

However, the two did not leave together .

When she was walking on a path in the bush, she was accosted by her brother-in-law.

He reportedly grabbed her and dragged her to a secluded spot where he allegedly raped her once. After the alleged rape, he reportedly gave his sister-in-law $20 and asked her not to tell anyone about the incident.

The complainant later made a report to the police, leading to his arrest.

Memory Ndlovu is prosecuting the case.
