The curtain comes down on the Ingwebu National Association of Primary School Heads (Naph) Under-14 football tournament with the finals on at Pelandaba Stadium in Gwanda this morning.

Four schools — Induba (Bulawayo), Mahlothova (Matabeleland North), Makhubu from Mangwe District and Gwanda South’s Mkhaliphe (Matabeleland South) — go into the semi-finals before the final that will decide the winner of this year’s competition.

The winners will pocket $2 000, runners-up $1 500, the third-placed team $1 000 while the team that comes fourth will get $800.

The competition is sponsored to the tune of $30 000 while $15 950 was set aside as prize money.

Ingwebu general manager for marketing and corporate affairs Themba Sibanda yesterday said the opaque beer manufacturing concern was excited about this year’s final.

“We are excited that we are having the final of the competition tomorrow (today). We hope that the best team of the day will win. We hope we will continue sponsoring the competition as long as the economic situation in the country allows,” he said.

“Ingwebu decided to sponsor the competition because in most cases sponsorship is targeted at secondary schools. We believe that skills and talent from children must be discovered at a tender age. We are also sponsoring the competition as part of our social responsibility.”

The Bulawayo Province inter-district competition was hosted by Induba were held at White City Stadium on July 13.

Inyathi from Matabeleland North hosted the inter-district competition on July 20 while the Matabeleland South competition was held in Plumtree on July 19. Matabeleland South are represented by two schools, Makhubu and Mkhaliphe, because they are the hosts.
