A 23-year-old rapist has been jailed for an effective eight years for sexually assaulting an 83-year-old woman.

Petros Phiri of Ride Farm in Chegutu was initially slapped with 11 years’ imprisonment before three years were conditionally suspended when he appeared before regional magistrate Solomon Jenya on Tuesday this week.

The State led by Temptation Maromo proved that on August 3 2011 at around 11pm, Phiri sneaked into the complainant’s bedroom while she was outside watering her vegetable garden.

When the granny was about to retire to bed, she was shocked to encounter Phiri who grabbed and throttled her and threatened to kill her.

Phiri overpowered and undressed the woman before raping her once. She screamed for help, but no one came to her rescue.

The court further heard that after a while, she heard voices of people talking outside and screamed again, drawing her grandson’s attention who then rushed into the house.

The grandson wrestled Phiri who at the time was partially dressed before the latter stormed out of the room. He was arrested three days later.

In his defence, Phiri claimed he was drunk and had mistakenly gone to the octogenarian’s house instead of his unidentified girlfriend’s place.
