Pencil slim and vivacious Victoria America outclassed 11 other contestants to become Miss Gweru 2012 at the beauty pageant held at the Cathedral Hall in Gweru at the weekend.
America, a 17-year-old Mkoba Teacher’s College student, takes over from Eluta Kundiona who won the contest last year.
She was also voted Miss Bikini after mesmerising the audience with her maverick dancing during the show.
Shermaine Dhliwayo and Kina Madamombe were crowned 1st and 2nd princesses respectively.
By winning the contest, America, together with Dhliwayo and Madamombe, booked a place to contest in the Miss Zimbabwe Midlands pageant later this year.
America, who hails from Daylesford suburb in Gweru, could not hide her joy and shed tears soon after being crowned. She told NewsDay that she would use her crown to play an ambassadorial role and uplift other youths with whom she shares the same dream.
“I am excited, and happy. I feel like I am on the moon. I never expected it,” she said.
“My first assignment as Miss Gweru is to help little girls who have the same dream as me to become what they want to be.”
The show organiser, who is also the director of Image Modelling Agency, Mavis Koslek, expressed satisfaction at the manner the show was held.
“I am happy for the winners and I encourage those who did not win to keep trying. The show went on well and after this, we are now looking forward to the Miss Zimbabwe Midlands pageant,” Koslek said.
