Long-distance runner Cuthbert Nyasango hoisted the country’s flag high on the last day of 2012 London Olympic Games after finishing a respectable seventh in the men’s marathon event at the world’s biggest sporting showcase in London yesterday.

Nyasango’s compatriot, Wirimayi Juwao, who was making his Olympic debut, also put on a brave show after running a season best time of 2hrs 14:09secs to finish on position 15th.

However, the undoubted star for Zimbabwe was Nyasango, who made his presence felt in the tough and gruelling race to not only finish in the top ten, but also post a personal best time of 2hrs 12:08secs.

The Nyanga-born athlete, who turns 30 next month, also became Zimbabwe’s best performer in the Olympics Marathon after eclipsing Tendai Chimusasa’s ninth-place finish at the 2000 Sydney Olympics.

Chimusasa, however, still holds the national marathon record of 2hrs 10:57secs he ran on his way to winning the Hamburg Marathon in 1998.

Yesterday, Nyasango finished four minutes behind the eventual winner Stephen Kiprotich, who won Uganda’s first medal of the London Olympics.

The less-fancied Ugandan shot to the front with six kilometres remaining to defeat the experienced Kenyan pair of Abel Kirui and Wilson Kipsang.

Kiprotich followed in the footsteps of his compatriot John Akii-Bua, who was 400 metres hurdles champion 40 years ago, and crossed the line in two hours, eight minutes and one second.
