An Inyathi man allegedly burnt himself to death in a suspected case of suicide after he was ditched by his live-in girlfriend last Friday.

Matabeleland North police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Siphiwe Makonese confirmed the incident yesterday and identified the victim as Bulisani Bajila. His age was not given.

According to police, Bajila got home in the evening and drenched his whole body with petrol and set it ablaze after his 27-year-old girlfriend Buhlenkosi Ndlovu accused him of cheating on her.

“Bajila apologised, but Ndlovu had already made up her mind. When this happened, Bajila decided to pour petrol on himself,” Makonese said.

“The petrol was meant for the generator. Thereafter he set himself alight with a burning candle at around 5:30pm. Ndlovu escaped through the window with serious burns. The two were taken to Inyathi Hospital where Ndlovu was admitted. Bajila was later transferred to Mpilo Hospital where he died at about 11pm.”

Ndlovu’s condition could not be ascertained yesterday.
