Police in Bulawayo yesterday said they had arrested a 17-year-old Pumula schoolboy who allegedly fatally stabbed a colleague from Magwegwe West suburb under unclear circumstances.

Acting Bulawayo provincial spokesperson Assistant Inspector Bekimpilo Ndlovu confirmed the incident which occurred last Thursday. The deceased — a student at Masotsha Ndlovu Secondary School — was reportedly buried over the weekend.

“We are investigating a murder that occurred in Magwegwe West involving school-going boys on Thursday,” Ndlovu said.

He declined to give further details.

But the deceased’s grandmother Treziah Mahlangu told NewsDay her grandson was stabbed outside her gate at around 6pm after he left the house saying he would be back soon.

“I asked him where he was going but he did not say, it was about 6pm.

“A few minutes later our tenant said he had seen my grandson lying at the gate covered in blood,” she said.

“I rushed outside and when I got to him, I tried to ask what had happened. He was gasping for air. “His clothes were covered in blood.

“He gasped three times and died.

“I then rushed to a relative who stays close by to notify her of what had happened.

“Other residents started gathering and some called the ambulance and police.”

Mahlangu said she later heard that her grandson and another boy had been involved in a fight sometime ago.

“I heard they fought and my grandson beat that boy. I think he took it for granted that the fight was over but the other boy seemed to be still holding a grudge,” she said.

“We heard that in the afternoon on that day, the other boy was seen sharpening a knife saying there was a dog he wanted to kill.

“We heard that after stabbing my grandson, the boy further pelted him with stones as he tried to run away.”
