The Bulawayo city centre and some sections of the Belmont industrial area were hit by a power blackout for an hour yesterday morning, which brought business to a halt.

Zesa spokesperson Fullard Gwasira said he was not aware of the blackout and promised NewsDay an explanation after an hour.

But when contacted after an hour, Gwasira’s mobile phone went unanswered and several efforts to reach him later were unsuccessful. Last week the Bulawayo Thermal Power Station, which generates about 30 megawatts of electricity, collapsed.

Power cuts also marred the 17th edition of Mine Entra held at the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair grounds. In March this year, Bulawayo was hit by a six-hour power outage, which stretched from 7:30am to 1:30pm, disrupting business throughout the city.

Most shops without generators resorted to candles, but lost business in the process.
