A teenage girl will spend the next five months in prison after she was convicted by a Chitungwiza magistrate over charges of assaulting her 40-year-old boyfriend with a broken beer bottle.

Linda Mafunga (18) appeared before Chitungwiza resident magistrate Olivia Mariga facing assault charges as defined under Section 89(1)(a) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act Chapter 9:23.

State prosecutor Henry Muringani told the court that on July 18, Mafunga met her boyfriend Thomas Dick at Murisa business centre in Seke and the two had an argument when Dick asked her why she had lied to him that she was not at the place.

As the quarrel between the two ensued, Mafunga, who at that time was reportedly drinking beer, broke the beer bottle and struck Dick on the chest and on the back.

The State established that Mafunga’s actions were intended to cause bodily harm and Dick sustained deep cuts and severely bled as a result of the attack.

Mafunga was initially slapped with seven months in prison, but two months of the term were suspended for five months on condition she does not commit a crime of a similar nature within that period.
